The Easter season is over and what an action packed weekend it was. Amid the carousing, merry making, celebrations and church services across the country, a momentous decision was awaited by the citizenry and the world at large to be made by the six-judge Supreme Court of the Republic of Kenya. That historical decision was finally made and will continue to be debated, bisected and dissected for many years to come.
While some are celebrating the Supreme Court verdict validating the election of Uhuru Kenyatta as president elect, there are others in the valley of despair since the verdict did not go their way. To the victors, do not forget that almost half the country voted for one or the other side of the leading presidential candidates in the recently concluded general election and therefore while Uhuru Kenyatta may have been elected with the required majority, nearly half the people in Kenya did not vote for him. To those who feel that the verdict should have gone the other way, similarly know that the popular vote carried the day and while you may not have voted for Uhuru Kenyatta, the majority of those who cast their vote as has been ruled by the Supreme Court chose him as their elected president for the next 5 years!
Accordingly, the euphoria of the moment to climax at the swearing in ceremony of the President and Deputy President elect in a weeks’ time – 9th April 2013 to be precise – should be channeled towards mending fences and building bridges with those of our brothers and sisters who will have to live with the decision of the majority as has been ruled by the Supreme Court for the next 5 years. Those who put up a gallant fight in the CORD camp led by their stalwart leader Raila Odinga have accepted the verdict of the Supreme Court, with the rider that they did not necessarily agree with some of the opinions put forth by the judges and this should be enough grounds for loyal CORD followers to accept this outcome and go about their lives and build this great nation called Kenya for the sake of the future generations.
Finally there are those who neither voted for Raila or Uhuru and they will also need to accept that they proudly and courageously chose to exercise their democratic rights of voting to whomever they felt would be best suited to leading this great nation despite huge odds stacked against their candidates to win.
The people of Kenya backed by the Supreme Court have spoken and we must get back to our desks, offices, factories and farms to continue with the nation building activities as well as assist our leaders move the country to the next level of success and development.
For the sake of the country we all need to be magnanimous in this victory because it is Kenya and all Kenyans that have won.
GOD BLESS KENYA!
